From piloting mars rovers to getting up close and personal with other worlds and programming robots, D38 students innovated during the first-ever Students in STEAM event, held on Friday, Oct. 8.
Seven Colorado school districts, including Lewis-Palmer School District 38 sent more than 60 attendees to the Schneider Electric and D38-led event. Hosted at the Space Foundation’s Discovery Center in Colorado Springs, students had up-close access to unique tools and spaces as they learned more about STEAM.
STEAM, which stands for science, technology, engineering, the arts and math, grounded all activities during the all-day event. They included a communication project which allowed students to act out a Capcom scenario to save a space crew, operating robot spheres to complete objectives, piloting mars rovers in a simulated environment and more.
Students also heard from Lauren Smith, an operations manager for Northrop Grumman who has worked for NASA and serves on the Board of Directors for the Space Foundation. Smith hosted a fireside chat with the goal of inspiring students to explore and consider STEAM careers.
