a local artist presents to the Board of Education

A pair of local authors helped students at Bear Creek Elementary School further their love of reading, storytelling and more during an all-day spring reading event which has been held for more than 20 years.

According to Anita Schuh, who assisted in organizing the recent event with other members of the Bear Creek team across all grades and specialty areas, inviting in local experts allows students the opportunity to visualize community involvement in our schools and gain deeper appreciation for the process of storytelling.

“Students shared that after hearing our authors, they were inspired to write their own books and gained a greater appreciation for each expert’s journey,” Schuh said.

New this year were the guest authors, including Rachel Hetrick, an author, alumni and employee of the Lewis-Palmer School District 38 system, as well as author Heidi Koland. The team also organized for the Pikes Peak Library District, and international students from both Lewis-Palmer and Palmer Ridge High School to come and speak to various classes.

Each expert followed the theme of ‘Reading can take you anywhere,’ which according to Schuh, allowed students to see books as adventures to explore, captivating each student throughout the day.

The event, paired with other key elementary activities such as the Science Technology Arts and Math (STEAM) Day, comprise a comprehensive and exciting education at Bear Creek.
