Change is on the horizon for Lewis-Palmer School District 38 as its Board of Education approaches the November 2023 election with four of five seats up for election.

Three seats, including Director Districts 2, 4 and 5, reached the end of their four-year terms. The District 1 seat will also be up for a two-year term. Matt Clawson, who is term-limited as Director of District 5, said the makeup of the board may be changing, but the board’s actions should always be about the district’s students.

“The purest form of democracy is serving on the school board, and the school board is really where the rubber meets the road,” Clawson said. “I have five kids, all of which went through District 38, so I have a vested interest. One thing I’ve enjoyed is being on the school board, it’s nonpartisan, and my position was it’s all about the kids. Every decision we make and action we take, it’s about the kids.”

Prospective candidates, among other interested community members, were invited to a candidate information session on Aug. 2, where Clawson, Board of Education President Tiffiney Upchurch, as well as members of the district’s administration, shared key dates and information pertinent to running for the Board of Education.

“Folks who serve on the board should be commended and appreciated for the time and the talent they give,” Upchurch said. “It makes such a difference in our schools, the lives of our students and staff, and this community. Dedication, leadership, thoughtful decision making, collaborative problem solving are all paramount characteristics of good school board leadership.”
