In Lewis-Palmer School District 38 we celebrate excellence in academics.

We celebrate accomplishments in athletics.

We celebrate talent in the performing arts.

On April 23, our district took time to celebrate achievements of the heart at the Ninth Annual Aliorum de Awards, hosted at Lewis-Palmer High School. The special event recognizes individuals across the district who have made a difference in the lives of those with a disability.

This year’s celebration kicked off with a first-ever sign language performance by students from Lewis-Palmer Middle School.

“What started as a conversation about acknowledging students grew into something bigger,” said Michelle Nay, family liaison in D38. “We had a record 90 nominations to review, and we are here to honor all of the nominees, in addition to our award recipients.” Nominees included students, staff, and community members.

A total of 12 awards were presented by District leaders, and honorees were described in many positive and inspirational ways.

“Wyley Cotton has been a great advocate for our students. As an employee of Monument’s Natural Grocers, Wyley demonstrates kindness, respect, patience, and understanding, while teaching our students valuable skills,” shared the 18–21 Transition Services Team.

“Mrs. Kearns, paraprofessional at Prairie Winds Elementary, has an outstanding devotion to students on the autism spectrum. She works collaboratively with other school staff, but also builds amazing relationships with students to not only create a safe learning environment, but to ensure that students build independence, grow in their academic skills, and social skills,” said Julie Race, D38 parent.

“Matthew Grundel, junior at Palmer Ridge High School, has been a faithful, consistent peer partner and coach for our Unified basketball team. He has grown in confidence to the point where he leads much of each practice and knows each Unified athlete by name, as well as their unique needs and strengths,” shared Amanda Huckstep, D38 staff member and Unified basketball coach.

Lewis-Palmer School District applauds this year’s award winners for fostering inclusion, and ensuring a supportive environment for every student, every day.
