Monday was a day D38 5th graders won't soon forget.
On Monday, Sept. 29, 5th graders from across D38 participated in Rocket Day at Bear Creek Elementary, an exciting capstone to classroom lessons that explored rockets, the forces of flight, and the effects of gravity.
Prior to Rocket Day, students put their learning into action by each building their own Cosmic Ray rocket from Estes Rockets. They also added unique decorations to their rockets to help identify them after they returned to earth.
Before any rockets were launched, students received a safety briefing and instructions on loading rocket engines from qualified volunteers, and then placed their rockets on the launch platform. They then got to assist in the launch sequence and press the button to send their rocket sky-high. After reaching their apex, the Cosmic Ray rockets would deploy a parachute and float slowly back to the ground. After all the launch platforms were clear, students were able to retrieve their downed rockets.
This exciting opportunity is designed to ignite a passion for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and rocketry in our 5th graders' minds. The resources and tools for the experience come thanks to Estes Education, who says they believe in the interdisciplinary nature of the STEM disciplines and strive to ensure students are prepared for an ever-changing workforce.
D38's 5th Grade Rocket Day couldn't have gone off without the work and dedication of the volunteers who attended, as well as D38 staff, particularly Bear Creek Elementary Technology Teacher, Vicki Nalley.
"The 5th Grade Rocket Day was a resounding success, in large part as a result of the efforts and leadership of Mrs. Nalley. Thank you, Mrs. Nalley, for everything you do for our students and staff," Dr. Michael Brom, Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment said.
