A partnership with parents at Prairie Winds Elementary School is affording students the opportunity to try a host of nutritious, and at times uncommon, foods. Dubbed ‘Try-it-Tuesday’ by parent/staff-volunteers Pam Cooley and Brooke DiStefano, the program is also garnering some attention from local news outlets.
Lindsey Jensen of KOAA News 5 visited PWES and Lewis-Palmer School District 38 to end January when students were trying Brussel Sprouts.
According to Cooley and DiStefano, new foods are prepared and brought into the school most Tuesdays for students to try during lunchtime. No students are required to taste the samples, but those who do often find they enjoy the healthy food options.
On Jan. 31, a majority of students voted that they “liked” Brussels sprouts and would try them again.
“It’s all about showing them healthy foods can taste good too,” DiStefano said in an interview. Cooley added, “I think the more we do it, the more they are excited to try new things.”
