STEAM Day/Night and Science Fair

Bear Creek Elementary’s STEAM Day/Night and Science Fair was a fun day for all from morning to night!  The gymnasium was filled with close to 200 students’ projects displaying their expertise in the science or engineering topic of their choice. The guest judges, with their own expertise in science fields, were busy asking questions to all of the participants. All the classrooms were filled with STEAM activities throughout the day led by the grade level teachers, along with our special guests from Challenger Learning Center with their planetarium and MESO (Mobile Earth & Space Observatory). The entire staff was busy creating an environment where students were engaged in learning throughout the entire day.

By the time STEAM night rolled around, the school was filled with STEAM activities on both levels of the school. Mrs. Harris and Mrs. Calanni had a fun “Pendulum Painting” filled with students and parents in the art room, teachers manned math activities upstairs and teachers manned science activities downstairs. The special guests included CSASTRO, COOL SCIENCE, Challenger Learning Center Planetarium, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, COSROCS, Western Museum of Mining Industry, Cave of the Winds, Pikes Peak Library District, Dan Mariotti and Jeff Huspek with music activities, BCES Cub-Botics Team hosted by Vicki Nalley, STARLab planetarium from our own district, and all Key Club students with our Kiwanis Leaders from LPHS and PRHS helping with every aspect of the night.

We thank the STEAM committee members, staff of BCES and PTO for creating an incredible night of excitement open to our wonderful students and parents of the BCES community.

Congratulations to our nine 6th grade participants from BCES for working several weeks on science fair projects for the Pikes Peak Regional Science and Engineering Fair!  On Feb. 24th, nine students spent over four hours at UCCS being judged by scientists and engineers from all over the Colorado Springs area.  Ben B., Ben K., Justin B., Andi A., Ana P., Annalyn D., Carter B., Michael M., and Aiden L. did an excellent job of representing BCES.  Several of our students won special awards: Michael M. won 5th place in his category and two students are moving on to the next level. Both Ben B. and Ben K. won 2nd place in their category. So proud of everyone’s hard work. Good luck to Ben B. and Ben K. in the Colorado Science and Engineering Fair at Colorado State University in Fort Collins.
