Drama Club

Bear Necessity Theatre Company is Palmer Ridge's extra-curricular theatre program.  We provide a place for creative expression in the form of performance.  Every year, we produce 2-3 main stage productions (including a musical), a one-act play, and several improv shows.  We are proud to be International Thespian Troupe 7440, and participate in the annual Colorado Thespian Conference.

Bear Necessity has gained local, statewide, and national recognition.  Over the past several years, we have placed third (2009, 2013, 2017, 2022) and second (2012) at the Pikes Peak Regional One-Act competition, as well as multiple recognitions for Best Set, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress.  We have had students recognized at the State Thespian Conference for their performances there; we have also been nominated to perform at the American High School Theatre Festival.  Bear Necessity's musicals have been nominated in multiple categories over the years for DCPA's Bobby G Awards, and has won for Outstanding Orchestra, and Outstanding Choreography. Our improv students were invited to perform at the 2015 TEDx Colorado Springs conference.  In November 2015, Stage Directions Magazine named Bear Necessity Theatre Company the 2015 Southwest winner of the High School Honors Theatre Program.  In 2016, Bear Necessity became the first theatre in Colorado to perform Starlight Express, and in 2017 they presented the world premier of Todd Wallinger's new play, A Purrfect Crime. In 2021 Mr. Belk was featured in TheatreAve.com's blog, Theatre People. In 2022 he was named the Colorado Thespians High School Theatre Educator of the Year.

The drama club is independent from the theatre classes.  We try to meet on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month, after school, in the Drama Room, B1216. (Sometimes the dates change due to the school calendar.) There are no requirements to join, other than a desire to help.
