Something we hear regularly from members of the D38 community is praise for our schools' secretaries and front office staff. We're told the work they do is crucial to keeping their schools running smoothly and everyone on track. They are often referred to as the heartbeat of their schools. In this month's Staff Spotlight, we're highlighting Janae Griffiths, Principal's Secretary at Bear Creek Elementary School.
What drew you to work in D38 and/or what is your favorite thing about working in D38?
I was drawn to Lewis-Palmer School District 38 because I am a D38 parent of two boys, one at BCES and one at the middle school. My kids had been going to Bear Creek, and I was impressed by how seamlessly this large elementary school runs, and how the staff and our PTO make it feel like a small community full of support and encouragement. The community here in D38 is incredibly welcoming, and I appreciate how everyone collaborates to create a positive atmosphere. My favorite thing about working in D38 is the sense of belonging that permeates in our schools. It’s inspiring to be part of a team that truly values education and the well-being of each child and staff member. I LOVE who I work with.
Where/how do you see our D38 Core Values exemplified in your school throughout the year?
The D38 Core Values are woven into the fabric of our school. Integrity is upheld through honest communication and transparency in our interactions. Respect is evident in the way we celebrate each student and staff member's individuality and promote kindness among peers. Connection is fostered through strong relationships built between staff, students, and families, creating a supportive community. We encourage Growth by providing various opportunities for professional development and student enrichment, ensuring that everyone can reach their full potential.
Can you tell us about a time a student or staff member inspired you or just brightened your day?
I am inspired to work hard and continue to do my best every day just by watching my teachers, paraprofessionals, and custodians do the same. My staff inspires me every day because of their love and dedication to their job. I keep Lemon Heads on my desk not because I particularly like them a lot, but because I have a wonderful teacher who loves them, and she said that they help her on the bad days. So I keep them there and will continue to buy them because now when any staff needs a pick me up, they can come get a Lemon Head . This job is a lot like a Lemon Head, if you get through the sour hard days, the sweet middles or the good days make it so worth it.
How do you build such strong connections with the students, staff, and members of the community?
Building strong connections is all about being present and approachable. I love my community. I make it a point to greet students, staff and parents by name, engage in conversations, and show genuine interest in their lives. I care for the community in which I work and live. I also participate in school events and community activities, which helps strengthen those relationships outside the office. By creating an inviting atmosphere where everyone feels valued, we can build a strong sense of community that supports our shared goals.
When you reflect on your time with D38, what is your favorite memory or what makes you the most proud?
One of my favorite memories was during a school-wide event called STEAM Day. On STEAM Day, students showcased their science fair projects, and vendors across our community, and our staff brought together the love of learning in a fun way for both students and families. Seeing the pride on their faces as they participated or went to different activities and to watch all the staff's hard work bring so much happiness and knowledge was incredibly rewarding. It reminded me of why I love being a part of this community. I’m most proud of the collaborative spirit that exists at Bear Creek. Each member of our team contributes to the success of our students, and it’s inspiring to witness the positive impact we collectively have on their lives.
Can you speak to the importance of what staff members like yourself do for their schools in D38?
As a principal's secretary, I see my role, along with my other office personnel, as the heartbeat of our school. I help keep everything running smoothly, from managing schedules to supporting students and staff with their needs. It’s essential to create an environment where teachers can focus on teaching, and students can thrive without distractions. The work all the office staff does behind the scenes is crucial. It ensures that our school operates efficiently and that everyone feels supported. Ultimately, every staff member plays a vital role in shaping our school culture, and I’m proud to be part of that effort.
