Students at Bear Creek Elementary now have a state-of-the-art tool to measure and study the everchanging weather in Southern Colorado.
Thanks to the Monument Hill Kiwanis Club, a new solar-powered weather station sits atop the school that will conveniently provide students with data about things like wind speed, precipitation, air temperature, lightning activity, and even solar radiation.
“This is really state of the art. It’s solar powered and doesn’t need anything hooked up to it. It measures an incredible amount of stuff,” said Dr. Tomlinson with the Monument Hill Kiwanis Club.
Dr. Tomlinson, along with Kiwanis member Steve Sutherland presented the weather station to 6th grade science students at Bear Creek on May 9th. During the presentation, students answered questions about their knowledge of weather science and what they hoped to learn from the weather station. The idea to gift the students at Bear Creek the new weather station came about after the Kiwanis Club members spent an entire day at the school teaching students about the weather.
“After they showed interest, we thought, well if they had their own weather station here, it would give them that personal connection. I asked the company, Tempest, if they had any educational programs, and they gave us a pretty hefty discount.” Dr. Tomlinson said.
“I can’t thank you enough from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for this gift,” 6th grade Science Teacher Valerie DeLello told the Kiwanis Club members at the end of the presentation. They were then given a roaring “THANK YOU” from students.
