Principal's Message

  • Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year at Bear Creek Elementary School!

The district theme from last year continues to live on with “Every Student, Every Day” while expanding to include “Strong Schools, Strong Community “. And to those of you who are new to our school, we are glad you are joining the Bear Creek family. Although almost 850 students may conjure up the thoughts of a large elementary, the staff, families, PTO, and building configuration do a great job keeping our school a tight-knit community.

There are many opportunities for you to become actively involved in our school and district committees. Please consider being a volunteer within the classroom/school, a substitute, or being an active member of our PTO (Parent Teacher Organization), BAAC (Building Accountability Advisory Committee), or DAAC (District Accountability Advisory Committee – a new name might be coming soon). Also, watch for district committee offerings throughout the year that might interest you. Our PTO is low-stress and their fundraising provides us with many gifts, such as technology, field trips, staff support, fun community event opportunities, outdoor classroom, and playground additions. This year we will be looking to raise funds for a new school marquee. I highly encourage you to attend a meeting, meet others, and see if you would like to get more involved as we will be looking for several new board members next year.

We believe in educating the whole child and building on their strengths in partnership with you. Our vision statement is Building Character, Educating Students (BCES). We offer our students art, music, library, technology, counseling, and physical education opportunities. Developing relationships is important to us. We will continue to implement Responsive Classroom in order to assist students in developing a more positive community within our school.

We have several procedures and programs in place to help us make children as successful as possible. Some of these include preschool and pre-kindergarten, free full-day kindergarten, MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports), Title I Assisted Reading/Math teachers, Gifted and Talented Education, Character Counts, Battle of the Books, on-site before and after child care, just to name a few.

I am a child-centered educator who has been fortunate enough to call LPSD home for the past 26 years, along with the privilege of being a principal for the past 15 years. I would like students and parents to know that I value students as the main ingredient in a successful educational process. It takes teamwork and communication to accomplish great feats and I look forward to working with the parents and community to help Bear Creek be the best learning environment that it can be for our students.

We use various ways to communicate: we will be sending home a newsletter every other week via email. Teachers send home newsletters. Our school website has announcements/calendar sections and you will want to look at the district/school websites for emergency information if the need should arise. Have you signed up with IC for text messaging?

The Bear Creek theme of the year is Reflection and Refinement, as I look forward to an amazing last year continuing our work on implementing a new language arts curriculum along with expanding our culturally diverse experiences while polishing up some of our loved strategies such as Depth & Complexity and peer observations for staff. As I stated in the spring, I will be heading into retirement in June. It has been such an honor and privilege to call LPSD, Palmer Lake ES, Grace Best ES, and Bear Creek my home for not only myself but my children. I will keep you posted as the year progresses in the process of selecting a new principal (it should start around February).

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if I can be of any assistance.

Looking forward to being on the same team,
    Peggy Parsley
