Principal's Message

  • Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year at Bear Creek Elementary School!

The school's theme this year centers around "big rocks". For those families who are returning, welcome back.  And to those of you who are new to our school, we are glad you are joining the Bear Creek family.  This year the district is offering both a traditional in-person approach to learning along with a new on-line opportunity for elementary students. Although 750 students may conjure up the thoughts of a large elementary, the staff, families, and building configuration do a great job keeping our school a tight-knit community.

Although there are normally many opportunities for you to become actively involved in our school and district communities, we have hit the "pause button" in some areas while we adjust to keeping our staff and students safe under the current COVID conditions.  Please consider being a volunteer within the classroom/school (we are welcoming volunteers back November 9th, but they will not be directly working with students or in the classroom at this time) or being an active member of our PTO (Parent Teacher Organization), BAAC (Building Accountability Advisory Committee), DAAC (District Accountability Advisory Committee) or volunteering at the school in a classroom or other area.  Our PTO is low stress and will be meeting virtually or at off-campus locations this year.  Their fundraising provides us with many gifts such as technology, field trips, staff support, fun community event opportunities, and, most recently, new playground “turf” under the equipment.  I highly encourage you to attend a meeting, meet others, and see if you would like to get more involved.

We believe in educating the whole child and building on their strengths.  We offer our students art, music, library, technology, counseling, and physical education opportunities.  Developing relationships is important to us. We implement Responsive Classroom in order to assists students in developing a more positive community within our school.  Please be sure to check out our Altitude Framework on our website as it will help to understand our purpose, our priorities, and our planning using various viewpoints.

We have several procedures and programs in place to help us make children as successful as possible.  Some of these include preschool and pre-kindergarten, free full-day kindergarten, MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports), Title I Assisted Reading/Math teachers, Gifted & Talented Education, Character Counts, Battle of the Books, Odyssey of the Mind, on-site before and after child care provided by the YMCA, to name just a few.

I am a child-centered educator.  I would like students and parents to know that I value students as the main ingredient in a successful educational process.  It takes teamwork and communication to accomplish great feats and I look forward to working with the parents and community to help Bear Creek be the best learning environment that it can be for our students.

We use various ways to communicate:  We will be sending home a news page every other week via e-mail using either Infinite Campus (IC) or Parent Link.  Teachers send home newsletters.  Our school website has announcements/calendar sections and you will want to watch the district/school websites for emergency information if the need should arise.  Have you signed up in IC for text messaging?  The district/schools also push information through Peach Jar.

Each year we start with staff and student hopes and dreams. The staff ones in the form of "rock" fish are on display in the foyer while the student-created fish are now stepping stones located outside each pod entrance. I hope next time you are on the campus that you can take a walk around the building and enjoy their creative works of art!

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if I can be of any assistance.

Looking forward to being on the same team,

    Peggy Parsley
