Mrs. Maria Johnson

Hello, I'm Maria Carmen Johnson named after my grandmother Maria Carmen Agostinone. I come from a family where I'm the ninth child with seven boys and two girls. That's right; I'm the baby of nine children. I started my teaching career when my youngest son of three boys went to preschool, and he is now 21. If you do the math, I have been teaching for 18 years. I have three degrees, Business Administration, Elementary Education and Master's of Education in Gifted and Talented. I've taught kindergarten, second grade, third grade and gifted education the past ten years. I'm a one person department in a school with about a 15% gifted population. Lewis-Palmer Elementary is very fortunate to have such brilliant students. As a gifted student myself, I make it my job to advocate for gifted students. My priority is to identify students that are gifted and make sure his/her needs are met in the regular classroom. If possible I try to pull students to work in small math or reading groups across all grades. Gifted student achieve when clustered together with like peers in their gifted area. All gifted students will have an Advance Learning Plan (ALP) that the school will abide by. Every year this plan is evaluated to make sure each student made one year's growth in one year's time in his/her gifted subject area. It is my pleasure to work with all children either through the gifted department or our enrichment programs offered to all students.
