Mrs. Sharyn Rutherford
Hello! I have been with the Lewis-Palmer School District since 2005, and I am very excited to be working with our English Learners and their families again this year. I began my career as an elementary classroom teacher and taught in Maryland, California, and Colorado, also in different capacities before my current role as an English Language Teacher. At Bear Creek I work with students in Kindergarten thru sixth grade who have another language in addition to English in their home or background. English Learners at Bear Creek are very special! My desire is to inspire in them a love of learning and to assist them in achieving academic English proficiency. It is a privilege to be a part of the wonderful and supportive staff at Bear Creek Elementary School.
To learn of updates in the EL Program, please visit the LPSD EL webpage. Also feel free to contact me at any time with questions or concerns.
We are thrilled to be working with your children at Bear Creek Elementary! Our role in the English Learner (EL) Program is to provide support to students who have a first language in addition to English in their home or background, or who have been exposed to a second language. We are here to assist students in gaining confidence and knowledge in the English language, and provide the necessary skills needed to be successful in school. The purpose of the EL Program is to assist students and their families, and the teachers who educate them.
English learners are provided services based on their English proficiency level in four domains: reading, writing, listening and speaking. There are six proficiency levels in each domain: 1-Entering, 2-Emerging, 3-Developing, 4-Expanding, 5-Bridging and 6-Reaching. They range from NEP (non-English proficient) to FEP (fully-English proficient). The ACCESS for ELLs state assessment is administered to students identified as English learners (levels 1-5) in Kindergarten through 12th grade each January. Students' proficiency levels are determined by their ACCESS results. ACCESS reports are mailed to families in May.
The EL Program provides instruction and guidance in content area classes as needed, to develop students’ academic English skills. We support students in the classroom, outside of the classroom in a quiet location, or in a small group setting depending on the needs of the students. We have over 40 languages represented in our school district, some of which include German, Norwegian, French, Arabic, Hebrew, Spanish and Nepalese.
Whether your child will be attending Bear Creek for only one year or for the remainder of their elementary school years, our desire is for them to experience a positive learning environment. Please do not hesitate to contact any EL staff member with questions or concerns. We at Bear Creek are here to promote a safe and nurturing learning environment for all English learners. We look forward to a great school year and the opportunity of meeting our new and returning EL families.
