Mr. Kurt Olgren
Welcome to Physical Education!
Here's a little background on myself. I was born (on vacation) in Marquette Michigan, where my family lived for several years before moving to Virginia. I finished my elementary education in Virginia, before moving to Monument in the 6th grade (I am a true LPMS Patriot). A fun fact is that LPMS was located at Grace Best for my 6th and 7th grade experience before relocating to the new middle school for 8th grade. I was part of the first graduating 8th grade class at the current middle school. It is definitely a privilege and honor to be currently working side-by-side with some of my LPMS teachers.
After graduating from Lewis-Palmer, I attended Colorado State University where I received my B.S. in biological sciences. I then became a skiing instructor at Breckenridge Colorado for a season, where I developed my passion for teaching. This passion led me to the University of Northern Colorado, where I received my second B.S. in Sports and Exercise Science, while also obtaining my teaching license for Physical Education K-12. I spent several years teaching and coaching in both Loveland and Fort Collins before coming home to LPMS in 2013.
In my free time, I enjoy the outdoors (fishing, hiking, kayaking), playing sports (football, basketball, baseball), and hitting the gym to stay physically fit. I'm a firm believer in practicing what you preach and do my best to be a great role model for the kids.
My goal as an educator is to create a healthy learning environment, where students feel comfortable setting goals for themselves and seeing them through. I try to teach the students important real-world values (determination, teamwork, leadership, discipline) that can be incorporated inside and outside the classroom. I like using "Teaching by Invitation" and "Intra-task Variation" to ensure all students are being challenged (regardless of skill level) and are growing in skill and knowledge. My philosophy is to make Physical Education fun, which will give the students confidence in breaking out of their shell and being involved in new sports and fitness activities. My overall goal is for my students to leave middle school and be lifelong movers in sports and fitness, not because they have to, but because they want to!
